Basic Tyre Knowledge You Should Know

My car is ____ (brand), ____ (model), 2008 year, how much does it cost to change a tyre?

How much is it for a 17" (inch) tyre?

I wanted to change new tyre, how much will it be? (...waiting for reply)

Some of you may ask one of the three questions for a change of tyre, without realizing that there are myriads of sizes available in the Hong Kong market. It would be difficult to answer without the correct size, we will be thinking if you are looking for....

There are just too many ....

In fact, you can find the tyre size on the sidewall of your vehicle tyre. There are three sets of numbers (as shown in the image above), and get these sets of numbers so you can accurately find out how much will it cost for your tyre and the choices available.

Are there any info can be found at the sidewall? Yes...

The tire manufacture date is also one of the basic that you should know. At least you are aware that there is manufacture date and when you purchase a second hand tire (aka used tire), you will take notice that some may have tempered with the date by grinding it off.

(English version) The origin of second hand tire(tyre)

The day before, we discovered that some of the tires in front of our stores were missing.
Looking back the video, we found out that there was a guy wearing addidas shirt (covering his face) and sport shoes searching for second hand tires.

Doing this at night searching for tires.... is it an understatement to say he stole the old tires / second hand tires for his use? Or maybe I am wrong, it's not stealing, it's picking up perhaps? But why covering his face?

Didn't he think that the tire may be unusable and burst if he used that?

At least I am now aware why people have a continuous source of second hand tire for his use... or maybe for selling.

If you plan to cover your face and "steal", why drive a vehicle with a company name on it? Your boss should think twice of continuing the employment contract with you, knowing that you actually steal things.

Since the company name is in Chinese as shown in the video, it would be much easier to find out the person.

How to differentiate authorized official tyre and parallel imported tyre

There is a Chinese version of this post, and I realize that I should have made the English version for this as well such that the English speaking Hong Kong residents are aware of the authorized official tyre as compared to parallel imported tyre (aka grey market products) in the current Hong Kong market.

There are more than 20 different brands in Hong Kong, and I will try to update with photos as much as possible.

I personally advise car owners / drivers to request a receipt, stating that the tyre is authorized official tyre to ensure the product information. Simply using the photos as depicted below where sole agent paste the label does not help a lot in the differentiation.

Hong Kong sole agent label is pasted on the tyre	There is no sole agent label on the tyre
If tyre is made in Europe, there is no EU label	If tyre is made in Europe, there will be EU label *

(Usually) More expensive than parallel imported goods

(Usually) Cheaper than authorized official goods

*The EU label on the tyre can be taken out. It's still better to look at the sole agent label for verification of authorized official tyre

Note: All Made in Europe tyres are not necessarily authorized official tyre

*The warranty calculation is actually the same as those oversea (such as Australia and U.S). It's base on the kilometer that you have used the tire, and pay the partial amount of fees to purchase a new Dunlop tire if the old one accidentally torn apart. There is a distinct difference between Dunlop warranty and Continental warranty
